Men Birgit gled bare mer inn i seg selv og ble enda mer ensom. Overgangen til ungdomsskolen ble vanskelig. Birgit fikk noen venner, men ikke akkurat de vennene en mamma ønsker for sine barn. Hjemme kom hun i sterk opposisjon, og humøret kunne svinge voldsomt. Hun kunne bli sår og nærtagende og ta mye av det som ble sagt, opp i verste mening. I andre perioder var hun full av energi. Birgit kunne finne på å ommøblere og rydde, selv om det var midt på natten. Da kom alt ut av skuffer og skap, og ting byttet plass. Sjokket. Det var på denne tiden Ann Mari virkelig ble bekymret for datteren. Første gangen Ann Mari fant Birgit bevisstløs, var hun bare 1. På den tiden hadde hun flyttet hjemmefra og bodde hos en venninne. Ann Mari husker fremdeles hvordan hun hadde sittet i ambulansen med Birgit og kjørt gjennom de stille gatene i Oslo- natten. Hun visste ikke lenger om hun ville ha en datter når morgenen grydde. En iskald klo holdt rundt mammahjertet og slapp først taket da legene sa at Birgit ville klare seg. Og selv om Birgit var utenfor fare, hadde redselen og sjokket satt seg i Ann Mari. Det skulle ikke bli siste gang. Flere ganger i løpet av årene forsøkte Birgit å avslutte livet sitt. Ann Mari levde i konstant redsel for at det en dag ville bli for sent. At de ikke skulle klare å redde henne. Hun gjorde alt i sin makt for å hjelpe datteren. Hun søkte om behandlingsplass og var med til psykolog. Men da Birgit ble 1. Hun hadde ikke lenger tillatelse til å få den samme innsikten i Birgits helsetilstand. Diagnosen. Men 1. Birgit mamma, og hun får Leon å ta seg av. Ann Maris håp er at det skal hjelpe Birgit. Sammen drar de hjem til Birgits leilighet, men Ann Mari orker ikke å gå inn. Hun føler på seg at noe forferdelig har hendt. Og det stemmer. Denne gangen står ikke Birgits liv til å redde. Og så er det alle spørsmålene hun stiller seg gang på gang.«Hvis jeg bare hadde gjort det slik eller sånn, kunne det ha reddet Birgit?» Hva kunne hun ha gjort annerledes? En dag innser hun at hun ikke kan fortsette slik. Hun er nødt til å leve videre og stå oppreist for de andre to sønnene, for familien og ikke minst Leon, som har mistet mammaen sin. I mellomtiden får hun snakke med en psykiatrisk sykepleier som lytter til henne. Men Ann Mari trenger mer. Hun trenger tilbakemeldinger på alle de vonde tankene. Da hun endelig kommer til psykologen, løsner det. Time etter time, uke etter uke deler hun de tunge tankene med psykologen. Og hun kjenner at det letter. Må gjøre noe. Ann Mari bestemmer seg for at hun må gjøre noe. Hun ønsker seg større fokus på psykisk sykdom, og hun vil kjempe for at det blir lettere for andre å søke hjelp. Akkurat slik Birgit selv brant for åpenhet. Ann Mari oppretter Facebook- gruppen som hun kaller Birgits hjerte, og arrangerer konsert hvor diverse artister stiller opp gratis. Hun leier lokaler i Ski sentrum og setter i gang med å gi tilbud til pasienter innen psykiatri og deres pårørende. Som mange andre som har mistet noen i selvmord, har Ann Mari gang på gang spurt seg selv om hva hun kunne gjort annerledes. Men i dag har hun sluttet å plage seg selv med de vonde tankene. Vi tog på motorcykeltur på Balis uberørte lillesøster Lombok med vores to børn på to og fire år. På eventyr i oldtiden Paradis- resort hvor klichéer kommer til kort. Kvinden løfter motorcyklens sæde op og fører en tragt ned i tanken. Med fingrene spørger hun, om vi skal have en, to eller tre liter benzin. Vi skal have tre liter i hver motorcykel, hvilket vi forklarer med smil, fagter og tre strittende fingre. Kvinden smiler bredt tilbage. Hun har lige solgt halvdelen af sit varelager og kan formentligt klare sig uden flere salg resten af ugen. Begge motorcykler bliver fyldt op, og vi betaler med en håndfuld indonesiske "matadorpengesedler", der samlet modsvarer i omegnen af 2. Vores børn må forlade deres nye venner for igen af blive smidt op foran på hver deres motorcykel. I en støvsky fra den rødbrune jordvej fortsætter vi vores eventyr. Alene i Kuta. Vi kører gennem den søvnige surferby Kuta, hvor små bambusrestauranter med blå plastikstole ligger side om side i strandkanten. Af helt ubegribelige årsager er Kutas strande ikke oversvømmet af tykke blege turister endnu. Her er over 3. 0 grader varmt, strandene er af det fineste hvide sand, vandet er krystalklart og har græsklædte bjerge som baggrundskulisse, og udsigten er smukkere end et retoucherede postkort. Selv børnene står med opspilede øjne og åben mund. Vi er helt alene på 1. Kun én vej går gennem Kuta, og i den tid vi har stået og sukket over udsigten, har der ikke været andre motorcykler på vejen end vores. Fra restauranterne dufter der af krydret mad, så vi smækker os ned i et par stole og bestiller en omgang indonesisk til hele banden: Kyllingesuppe med chili, avokadosalat og nasi goreng til fire personer inklusivt drikkevarer for under 1. Ungerne er smuttet ud i køkkenet for at se, hvordan maden bliver lavet og kommer tilbage med papir, farveblyanter og munden fuld af bananchips. Nyder udsigten. Vi slubrer den velsmagende mad i os, mens vi nyder udsigten og stilheden fra første parket. Vi lægger Kuta bag os og kører hen ad en jordvej, der skærer en lige linje gennem en samling rismarker. Solens stråler får vandspejlet mellem risplanterne til at glinse. Ungerne hviner henrykte, da vi kører slalom mellem nogle store mudrede vandbøfler, der krydser vejen fra den ene rismark til den anden. For os voksne er det befriende at komme til et sted, der ikke er overrendt af turister, og hvor befolkningen virker mere autentiske, end de gør på eksempelvis Bali Vi drejer ind i landet, og motorcyklerne bumper af sted på en lille nedstampet sti gennem junglen. Hist og her dukker der små palmeklædte lysninger op, hvor en landmand har bygget et bambushus til sig selv og sin familie. Legende børn løber os i møde med begejstrede råb. De vinker og poserer foran kameraet. Skiltet med teksten Nationalparken toner frem for enden af den bumpede sti, og en mand kommer traskende ud af et hus og stikker hånden frem. Det koster et par håndøre at komme ind i parken. Over os svinger brølende aber sig rundt i trætoppene, og en larmende flod følger os gennem junglen. Den er på vej ned, mens vi er på vej op. Et skævt skilt med en tegning af et vandfald og tallet tre indikerer, at vi er på rette vej. Stien bliver smallere og smallere, og krattet tættere og tættere, jo dybere ind i junglen vi kommer. Den voldsomme lyd af vandfaldet lokker i det fjerne, så de smattede høje trapper, bidende røde myrer og monsunregnen, der truer i horisonten, bliver ignoreret. Da vi endelig når frem, bliver vi snydt for at se vandfaldet i fuld udfoldelse. Floden, der har fulgt os hele vejen, er blevet bred og dyb, og et kæmpe træ er væltet ned i den lige netop der, hvor vi skal over. Vi står et øjeblik og nyder lyden af det buldrende vandfald, inden ungerne bliver smidt på skuldrene, og vi slukørede og sveddryppende må gå tilbage til motorcyklerne. Temperaturen når op over 3. Pludselig brydes stilheden af dansende trommerytmer, højlydt sang og bækkener, der bliver slået hårdt mod hinanden. Ungerne sprinter ud til vejen, og vi følger hæsblæsende med. Et kæmpe optog med tusindevis af indonesiske børn og voksne stamper af sted hen over den røde grusvej i farvestrålende traditionelle indonesiske dragter. En smuk prinsesse med en voldsom makeup bliver båret højt i en træbærestol af fire mænd, og ungerne bliver kastet på skuldrene igen for at følge optoget. Vi klapper og vinker til dem, imens vi smelter sammen med det larmende og dansende optog. Pludselig er det os, der er i centrum. Et filmhold har fået øje på de hvidhårede børn, der skiller sig ud i mængden, og den næste kilometer har vi et stort VHS- kamera som følgesvend. Min storsmilede søn, der sidder i sin egen bærestol på farens skuldre, nyder opmærksomheden. Den årlige ormefestival er skudt i gang. Budskabet er: Spis en Bau Nuale- orm og lev længere. Folk fra hele Indonesien valfarter dertil, og ormene er kun mulige at fange én gang om året. Præcis den dag var vi så heldige at være i Kuta på Lombok. De her oplevelser kan ikke bookes hjemmefra. Vi kunne ikke have googlet os til, hvornår ormefestivallen er, for det bestemmer Bau Nuale- ormen. Du bliver nødt til at være der.
